History Of Snow Skiing

The history of snow skiing is one that goes back approximately 5000 years. Drawings on rock were found in Norway that show a man on skis. Even the word ski comes from an ancient Norwegian word that means stick of wood. Early skis were basic designs crafted from wood, tied onto the feet with strong twine derived from wood. They were used to travel snowy regions more quickly and easily than a person could do on foot. The use of ski poles was a natural progression from the walking stick and were used to gain speed and maintain balance.

When it comes to the modern origin of skiing, one man that played a large role was Sondre Norheim. He is sometimes referred to as the father of skiing due to his invention of various equipment and methods that are still used to this day. Norheim grew up in Norway and invented a binding made from birch that reduced the risk of skis being lost during skiing. In 1870 he created a curved ski that was more flexible than current models and allowed for better turning. He even won the first downhill skiing competition held in Kristiania which is now the city of Oslo. Some experts will tell you that Norheim didn't invent anything as there is no solid evidence of this, however he is still an inspirational figure in the world of skiing.

In the 1850s skis were used in the Sierra Nevada gold mining region and to carry mail back and forth from Carson City. By the year 1857, mining camps were organizing downhill races. This led to the creation of the Thompson Alpine Club. The first legitimate ski club and ski school were formed around this time in Oslo. One interesting fact about skiing in the Swiss Alps area was that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle took a ski tour from Davos to Arosa. Doyle was the writer of Sherlock Holmes and was in the area with his wife who was being treated for tuberculosis. In the early 1900s, skiing came to the United States as a popular sport.

In 1905, a national tournament was held in Michigan. This tournament featured a 393 foot ski jump. Ski resorts began popping up all over the nation as the decades passed, with some of the earliest dating back to the 1940s. In the 1960s resorts like Aspen and Vail began attracting winter sports enthusiasts from all over the world. To this day, skiing remains one of the most popular and beloved winter sports. There are ski resorts located in every part of the world, with a great many of them in the Rocky Mountain area of the United States.
